Paint Markers FAQ's

Everything you always wanted to know about paint markers but didn’t know who to ask.

What makes Pro-Line HP a “high performance” marker?

Markal’s Pro-Line HP has the highest quality paint to write in difficult industrial marking applications. Most liquid paint markers have difficulty writing on oily metals, or metals that are coated with cutting lubricants or coolants, but the Pro-Line HP writes on all these surfaces and more. The marks dry quickly, are extremely durable and long lasting with a very opaque and visible paint.

What is the difference between the Markal Valve Action Paint Marker and the Pro-Line HP?

The Pro-Line HP is faster drying and has excellent writing characteristics on oily, soapy, wet and difficult applications where the Markal Valve Action Paint Marker may not mark as effectively. Also, the Pro-Line HP does not contain Xylene, a chemical that is proscribed by many organizations due to harmful by-products and regulatory issues.

We mark on stainless steel, does Pro-Line HP meet low chloride standards required in this type of application?

The colors white, yellow, red, black and blue meet the obsolete RDT F 7-3-T specification for halogenated compounds and Mil Spec 2041-D for detrimental substances. See our web page http://www.markal.com/pdfs/Technical_Analysis/prolinehp_typanalysis.pdf for the typical analysis for the most colors of Pro-Line HP.

Does Pro-Line HP contain Xylene?

Pro-Line HP does not use Xylene as one of its solvents. In fact, Pro-Line HP does not contain any chemicals that require a California Proposition 65 warning and has no chemicals that are currently listed on the EPA SARA 313 or the OSHA HAPS listings. Because it has no Xylene, it contains no Ethyl Benzene or Toluene, which are byproducts of Xylene, and are listed as carcinogens and reproductive toxins by the State of California.

We work outdoors where it can become extremely cold during the winter months and very warm in the summer, will Pro-Line HP work in this type of environment?

Pro-Line HP will write on surfaces as cold as -50°F and will work in the warmest climates people can work in, up to 150°F. It is not designed to write on hot surfaces as the polyester nibs can melt making the marker unusable.

Can Pro-Line HP marks be removed?

The Pro-Line HP is designed to be a permanent paint marker that leaves long, lasting and durable marks, but any paint can be removed from non-porous surfaces with the right types of solvents. Contact LA-CO Customer Service for information on what types of readily available solvents can be used to remove Pro-Line HP paint. Markal makes a line of paint markers specifically designed to be removed before cleaning and coating. The Markal Pro-Wash W is removable with plain water and the Pro-Wash D removes with detergent solutions. For more information, follow this link the Pro-Wash web pages http://www.markal.com/productDetail131.aspx

What are the best marking applications for Pro-Line HP?

Pro-Line HP will write on most any non-porous surface and leave a permanent, highly visible mark. It has been specially formulated to work in difficult marking applications, such as on oily metals or coated metals. Due to its unique combination of solvents, resins and pigments, the Pro-Line HP will leave marks that dry quickly and won’t rub off in difficult industrial marking applications where other markers simply won’t work.

Why should I use Pro-Line HP instead of a felt tip marker?

Markal’s Pro-Line HP uses pigmented paint, not ink, for marking. Paint makes a permanent, highly visible mark that will last longer than the ink mark from a felt tip. In addition, once the paint is dry, it generally won’t bleed through primers or overcoats of paint, like ink marks will. In general, the Pro-Line HP will make better and more permanent marks on most all non-porous surfaces.

I’m still not sure if Pro-Line HP will perform in my application, can I get some samples to test it out before buying?

Markal is happy to send samples or any of our products to qualified industrial users with legitimate interest in utilizing our products in their businesses. Please go to our sample request page on our website or contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-621-4025.
